This November the Symphony Orchestra takes off for the weekend for its annual retreat. This year two guest artists, Jason Snider, 4th Horn, and Julianne Lee, Principal 2nd Violin, from the Boston Symphony Orchestra will attend via Skype. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn from these talented professionals about how to practice for Orchestra, approaching solos and playing as part of a section.
MYS is delighted to announce that on November 15, guest artist for the Oregon Symphony and world-class cellist, Alban Gerhardt, will join MYS rehearsals to lead a sectional for our cellists. This incredible opportunity for our young musicians is made possible by our wonderful relationship with the Oregon Symphony.
MYS is thrilled to announce that the Oregon Community Foundation has awarded us with a 2-year grant of $40,000 to support a multi-year effort to raise our profile and tell the story of our organization. This project will align our communications with our strategic and artistic plans in order to meet and grow our multi-year earned and contributed income goals and to ensure the availability of tuition assistance funding so that no child is turned away due to financial constraints. Thank you to OCF!
We're delighted to share the news that in light of the number of string and wind players that enrolled this season, MYS has added a new ensemble to our classical offerings - a Baroque Orchestra. The Baroque Orchestra is an intermediate level ensemble, conducted by Portland Baroque Orchestra violinist, Adam LaMotte. Mr. LaMotte brings a wealth of talent and experience and MYS looks forward to how his work with MYS will strengthen the artistic experiences for their students.
This year we are thrilled to welcome 6 young musicians who received their first year of instrumental training with BRAVO Youth Orchestra; an organization that provides free after school music education to students at Rosa Parks Elementary School. This natural partnership brings BRAVO students into our entry level strings ensemble, Overture Strings, while MYS is pleased to provide tuition assistance to these families.
BRAVO Program Director Mark Woodward recently commented, "The kids are enjoying it. Each week is a special adventure for them—a treat and something to look forward to. They have shown a serious commitment to learning this music at home and seeking extra one-on-one sessions with teachers, some of which I have been doing when we return after the MYS rehearsal.
This partnership has been so rewarding for the students and for BRAVO. Thank you for your help in expanding the experiences of these students that would not have access otherwise."
The mission of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony is to educate, develop and promote young musicians. We enroll nearly 450 youth from 10 counties in the region, ages 5-18, in 12 orchestra, band and jazz ensembles each year. MYS is one of the largest youth music organizations in the country and one of the few offering a jazz program. Students need only one year of experience to join, and none are turned away due to financial circumstances beyond their control. Learn More about MYS >>
